The keynote speaker for the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology’s 2011 Teaching & Learning Symposium will be the distinguished author and educator Eric Liu. Liu is a dynamic leader who has inspired and energized audiences wherever he speaks.

Liu has served in senior leadership roles in politics, media, and business. He was once the White House speechwriter for Bill Clinton, and he later became Clinton’s Deputy Domestic Policy Advisor. He has given presentations in settings that have included the World Economic Forum, the Seeds of Compassion event with the Dalai Lama, Harvard, and various boardrooms of the Silicon Valley. In each venue Liu is able to spread his message of imagination and connection in unique ways.

Liu’s book Guiding Lights: The People Who Lead Us Toward Our Purpose in Life describes the practices of transformative mentors. His most recent book Imagination First: Unlocking the Power of Possibility, co-authored with Scott Noppe-Brandon, teaches the importance of the power of possibility and suggests how readers can practice and cultivate their own imaginations at work, home, or in school.

Seeing Liu in person offers a unique experience, says Patrick O’Sullivan, director of CTLT, who heard him speak at a conference and was impressed.

“He is very engaging, very positive, and very inspirational,” O’Sullivan said. “He was a good fit for the theme for this year’s symposium ‘State Your Passion for Teaching and Learning.’ Liu is tackling some very deep and profound topics in his work, and he is dedicated to inspiring others to join him in exploration of imagination and creativity.”

The Teaching and Learning Symposium will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center located in Uptown Normal. Registration is also available online at the CTLT’s web site ctlt.illinoisstate.edu.
