Biography

Julie-Ann joined the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology in July, 2012. As Coordinator for Faculty Development, she brings with her almost 20 years of experience in the faculty development field. She got her start as the Coordinator of the Teaching Enhancement Center at Temple University, was the Faculty Development Coordinator at the University of California, Los Angeles, and directed the Preparing Future Faculty program at Claremont Graduate University before arriving at Illinois State University. Additionally, she was an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology in the Elementary Education program at Purdue University, North Central. Julie-Ann holds a doctorate in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in college teaching from Temple University.

Functions at CTLT

Julie-Ann’s role is to provide programming, resources, and services for the ISU faculty in areas such as, but not limited to, consulting with faculty members about teaching-related issues, collaborating on a variety of campus initiatives, supporting the Teaching-Learning Communities, providing Workshops by Request, facilitating the Teaching Excellence Series, and supporting the New Faculty Orientation and Annual Teaching & Learning Symposium.

Research Interests

Julie-Ann’s research interest is in systematically exploring the impact of mentor-coaching on early academic career success. Current literature demonstrates that early career professors thrive when they are mentored; however, research also indicates that formal mentorship programs often fail due to logistical issues. In her capacity as a faculty development specialist trained in life-coaching techniques, Julie-Ann has provided a foundation for success and greater job satisfaction for early career professors in her role as mentor-coach. In her capacity as Coordinator for Faculty Development at CTLT and in her ongoing research at Illinois State University, Julie-Ann will continue to pursue best practices to promote early academic career success for faculty.

Personal

Julie-Ann also earned a Custom Clothing Certificate from Pasadena City College. When she isn’t battling a misbehaving pattern or turning fabric into a garment, she and her husband, sculptor Garret McFann, can be found at arts-related or historical reenactment events.
